2019 Wine Companion Ottelia Reviews

2017 Ottelia Riesling, Mount Gambier – 98 points

Wow. This is positively breathtaking, the complex spray of citrus flavours impacting the second the wine enters the mouth and linger long after the finish. The citrus is unsweetened green grapefruit juice and zest, acidity a given but nonetheless playing an important role. Trophy Best White Wine Limestone Coast Wine Show ’17 not the least surprising. For the record, pH 2.83, titratable acidity 9.36g/l and residual sugar 6g/l.

2017 Ottelia Sauvignon Blanc, Mount Gambier – 93 points

Grown in the very cool maritime climate of Mount Gambier on flinty limestone soils, harvested progressively over 10 days to capture a range of varietal fruit characters. Tends towards the more herbaceous end of the sauvignon blanc spectrum, with pronounced grassy and herbal aromas and flavours, but juicier, riper notes passionfruit and kiwi fruit do come through on the palate. It’s certainly fresh and vibrant, and right in the wheel house for fans of the style.

2016 Ottelia Sangiovese, Limestone Coast – 93 points

Fruit from warmer sites within the zone including Padthaway and Wrattonbully, vines 16-18yo. Fourteen months in seasoned French oak puncheons. Captures the essential character of the variety well. Typical cherry-like aromas, but not overly ripe, with some savoury elements and a touch of vanilla. Exactly medium-weight, flavours again predominantly in the sour cherry spectrum with attractive herbal notes and fine-grained but persistent tannin striking the right balance. Built to enjoy with food.

2013 Ottelia Cabernet Sauvignon, Coonawarra – 92 points

Selectively harvested from four vineyards, the individual parcels vinified separately, and including 7% merlot, matured in new and used French oak. An elegant, light to medium-bodied Coonawarra cabernet with a fragrant and expressive bouquet with predominantly red fruits (cherry uppermost) and a waft of choc-mint. Cherry, cassis and a sprig of dried herbs join on the palate alongside French oak and fine tannins.
